This visit was long overdue. Though one of us had been to Istanbul many years ago, we knew that the country deserved an extensive stay because of its rich history, vibrant culture, and great beauty. Across the country there are 21 World Heritage sites, for example. So, at long last after several friends made their own delightful trips to Turkey, we resolved to go.
A driving tour seemed the best option, concentrating on the western half of the country.
Our itinerary:
- Istanbul
- Ankara (Aslanhane, Mausoleum Ataturk, Gordion, Sivrihisar)
- Cappadocia via Hattusa (Goreme; Derinkuyu underground city)
- Catalhoyuk
- Konya (Sufi center)
- Antalya via Anatolian mosque at Esresoglu (Museum, ancient district)
- Kas
- Pamukkale via Xanthos-Letoon
- Hierapolis-Pamukkale
- Selcuk and the coast via Aphrodisias
- Ephesus
- Bergama (Pergamon, Hospital Asklepion)
- Canakkale via Troy
- Bursa
